Food and Beverage Processing
Polymers dominate Food & Beverage processing industry for hygiene, corrosion resistance, and design flexibility. Demand surges for FDA-compliant, easy-to-clean materials as automation increases. Plastics replace stainless steel in non-structural parts to cut costs.
Characteristics of Food and Beverage Processing Applications:
✤ Hygiene-Critical: Zero bacterial traps, easy cleaning (CIP/SIP).
✤ Wear & Impact: Constant abrasion from food particles/machinery.
✤ Corrosive Media: Acids (fruit juices), fats, steam, cleaning chemicals.
✤ Temperature Swings: Freezing (-30°C) to sterilization (120°C+).
Materials must meet specific properties as below:
Critical Property Requirements:
✤ Food Safety Compliance: FDA CFR 21/EC1935/NSF, non-toxic, no odor/taste transfer.
✤ Smooth Surfaces: Ra < 0.8μm to prevent bacterial buildup.
✤ Chemical Resistance: Withstand alkalis/acids/sanitizers (e.g., NaOH, peracetic acid).
✤ Durability: Resist cutting/scoring, steam autoclaving.
✤ Color Stability: No staining from food dyes (white/light colors preferred).
Recommended Materials for Food and Beverage Processing Applications:
✤ Surfaces: UHMWPE cutting boards, HDPE work tables
✤ Seals: Silicone gaskets for tanks, PTFE-lined O-rings
✤ Conveying: PTFE-coated belts, UHMWPE chain guides
✤ Fluid Systems: PP pipes, POM pump gears
✤ Machine Parts: PC inspection windows, nylon bearings
✤ HDPE: Cutting boards, tank liners, worktables
✤ PP: Food crates, filter housings, pipes
✤ UHMWPE:Conveyor guides, star wheels, bearings
✤ PTFE: Conveyor belts, gaskets, seals
✤ POM (Acetal):Gear pumps, valve parts, clips
✤ Silicone Rubber:Tubing, gaskets, seals
✤PC:Sight glasses, machine covers
✤ Nylon (PA): Bearings
Note: PVC is used cautiously (plasticizer concerns) — only food-grade rigid PVC for ducts/blowers.
